Are solar panels worth it in Minnesota

Federal solar tax credit
The federal tax credit is the most significant incentive to install solar panels for homes and businesses across the U.S. Currently, the federal tax credit equals 30% of the total solar panel installation costs. This policy was just recently extended until the end of 2035, so right now is an excellent time to go solar across the country.
Net metering
Minnesota has a state-wide net metering policy for all investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, and electric cooperatives.
Each utility must compensate customers for net excess solar generation at the average retail utility energy rate. Compensation for extra energy may take the form of actual payment, like a check, or as a credit on the homeowner's utility bill.
Utility incentives
Many of Minnesota’s utility companies offer solar rebates to their customers. One of the most popular is Xcel Energy’s Solar Rewards program.
Through this program, Xcel will pay customers an additional $0.02 per kilowatt hour (kWh) of solar energy produced in exchange for any renewable energy credits the system makes.
Property tax exemptions
Minnesota has a property tax exemption for solar panel systems. Under the Property Tax Exemption for Solar Generating Systems, 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes.
City of Minneapolis Green Cost Share
If you are a resident of Minneapolis, you’re in luck. The city offers a rebate program to match funds for property owners who make environmentally conscious home upgrades.
For solar system projects, you can get up to $50,000 based on a rate per kilowatt hour (kWh). To apply, you must meet specific eligibility requirements, and you can earn more money if you live in a “Green Zone” or are a part of the income-qualified housing category.

How do solar panels work?
Grid-tied solar system

Solar panels are mounted on your roof then wired together, and the power generated flows into an inverter where direct current (DC) electricity is converted into alternating current (AC) electricity. This electricity is either used by your home or is exported to the utility grid.
Hybrid solar system
In hybrid solar systems, rooftop solar panels are connected to both a solar battery and the electric grid. The solar electricity generated by your panels that your home does not use is stored in the battery instead of being sent to the grid, which reduces your reliance on the utility while also providing backup power when needed. Battery storage is still expensive but you may be able to reduce costs by using state incentives.
Off-grid solar system
Off-grid solar systems are not connected to the grid at all, so all of your energy needs must be met by the sun. There is no utility to fall back on. The solar installation needs to power your home not only during the day, but after dark as well, so many solar panels and a large battery system are required. These systems are often expensive and don’t make sense for homes that have access to the grid.
