There can be solar tax credits and incentives available at the federal, state and local levels. The calculator above will show you the value of all incentives your home is eligible for.
If you live in the Lincoln and Omaha areas, here’s some good news. Your utility company allows net metering to give you credits for sending your solar power back into the grid and make it pretty easy to interconnect.
However, without stronger rules protecting that net billing arrangement, the current climate could shift and homeowners who want to install solar could be S.O.L.
Nebraska is a beautiful state with lots of natural bounty to protect. But when even residents of one of the state’s most forward-thinking cities have shown tepid interest in supporting solar, where is the legislature, which with a few simple laws can spark a solar revolution in Nebraska like we’ve seen in other states?
Read on to explore the entire savings, policy, and incentive picture for home solar panel installation in Nebraska.
Learn what solar incentives are available to Nebraska homeowners
See what Nebraska solar incentives you qualify for based on your utility company and city
Find out how much these incentives and/or Nebraska solar tax credits will reduce your cost to go solar and add batteries
The federal solar investment tax credit will have the biggest impact on the cost you will face to go solar in Nebraska
If you install your photovoltaic system before the end of 2032, the federal tax credit is 30% of the cost of your solar panel system. This is 30% off the entire cost of the system including equipment, labor, and permitting.
Example: If your solar energy system costs $20,000, your federal solar tax credit would be $20,000 x 30% = $6,000.
The federal tax credit falls to 26% starting in 2033.
With net metering in some states, you get full retail rate credit for the amount of electricity you send back into the grid with your solar panels.
Net Metering requires your utility to monitor how much energy your solar power system produces and how much energy you actually consume to make sure you get credit for the surplus.
Nebraska requires all electric utilities to offer something called "net metering," but it doesn't meet the full definition of the term. All monthly surplus energy production (also called "net excess generation, or NEG") is applied as a credit to your next bill at whatever the utility decides is fair. Net metering is available for all solar power systems up to 25 kW in capacity on a first-come first-serve basis until net-metered systems reach a total of 1% of a utility’s peak electricity demand during the previous year.
Unfortunately, that leaves Nebraskans without a clear picture of how much they can save with solar. NEG varies from month to month, and is usually high in the summer and non-existent in the winter. In a state with full net metering, that ebb-and-flow allows you to size your solar system to meet your full annual usage and simply save credit for the excess until you need it. In Nebraska, you've got to size your system just right to be economical.
Luckily, the experts at system sizing are the installers we know. If you're in Lincoln, Omaha, or anywhere else, connect with solar installers near you to see how much you could save with solar!
While Nebraska does not have a dedicated state rebate for solar panel installation, some manufacturers offer their own solar rebates. These programs are usually time sensitive.

We had a residential solar system installed about 5 years ago including construction of a driveway overhang for panels. It operates fine and has had updates, checks for weather damage, and a panel cleaning. We are very satisfied with these results and the company, Shinnova. We recommend them to our neighbors and friends.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied. The installation process was really easy and limited work on our part. Everything got installed and was up and running same day. You can't beat the warranty....I got a quote from another solar company and while pricing was similar the warranty for Everlight was significantly better. We paid for the panels up front with no financing and got the tax rebate. Honestly, I don't know if it's worth it financially to buy these panels without the federal tax rebate. Even with the rebate we are looking at a break even point of about 12 years before the panels pay themselves off in money saved on our electric bill.

Every interaction with Gen Pro, from start to finish, has been positive. They worked hard, kept things neat, explained everything they were doing, and stayed below their original estimate. We produced more electricity than we used these last two months--it's an incredible feeling.

Dixon Power is great to work with! I would recommend them to anyone.<br />Renewable energy and it`s impact on the environment has always been important to Prairie Hill Learning Center since its inception. This has just been one step further toward our goal of providing a demonstration model to both the students and the community at large.

Terrible experience. I would say look around at other companies if you can. We signed up with them at the beginning of the year and they said that’s a “perfect time to sign up so we can get our solar panels installed and crediting our power account all summer while it’s sunny to help with the bill in the winter.” Now they have pushed back our installation date twice. Even though they said we’re up to be scheduled soon. Now they have pushed installation back to the end of summer so we’re worried we’re not going to get enough credit to help in the winter. ALSO when you sign a loan from them, they give you a year before you start making payments. Now half a year has gone by and we have nothing to show for it. And the news says that the state of IL is taking forever to give out the government refund checks for installation that GRNE said would take our loan (and our payments) way down. So far all I see is that they are screwing us over on a bad deal and we’re going to pay for it. More interest and money for them if we don’t get the money from the government right? We have been pushed back twice (so far) and who knows how many more time before they of ever come out and do what they claim they will actually do. My father in law went with another company AFTER we signed up with this one. He’s had his solar panels set up and working for months now and GRNE just keeps pushing our date back. GRNE never reaches out and keeps us updated, once we sign for the loan we don’t hear from them. We have to keep emailing and asking for updates. I would suggest going with another company!!

I was referred to SWT Energy by a friend who got solar panels from them a few years ago and knows Randy. He answered all my questions and was super helpful. They handled everything from start to finish and even helped me get a rebate from the utility! It was an outstanding experience, they were professional and very polite. I couldn't be happier with the solar and the Tesla Powerwalls they installed. Everything works as it should.

We had a 14kW system installed on our property. To go along with that, we ordered an $8,000 Tesla PowerWall. After six months of waiting on the PowerWall, I asked them to swap the PowerWall for more solar panels, which they agreed to do. That was over a year ago. Recently I discovered that Moxie is out of business and I'm paying $8,000 for production that I will never receive. I am not happy. I thought I'd done my research before choosing Moxie but in the end I got burned.
